On the past Sunday 7 November, Pope Benedict XVI visited Barcelona for the first time to dedicate the Sagrada Familia temple and altar. Once blessed for service, the church planned by Antoni Gaudí was anointed a basilica by the pontificate for its monumental and artistic character.

To assure the electric power supply of the audio-visual system installed in the temple during the homily given by the Pope, Salicru installed an Uninterruptible Power Supply system (UPS) from the new SLC CUBE3 range to work as a backup to the power generation system of the cathedral to guarantee continuous current in the event of alterations in the electric flow and to avoid possible incidents in broadcasting the event.

Around 6,400 people were inside the temple and saw the dedication live on 83 screens, and 36,000 watched it outside on 22 giant screens and the loudspeaker system installed in the adjacent streets. These spectators add to the television audience of numerous national and international stations who the Spanish Episcopal Conference estimate might have numbered up to 150 million.

The new SLC CUBE3 three phase UPS of 7.5 to 80 kVA and double conversion on-line technology have the main advantages of very low harmonic distortion, state-of-the-art DSP control designed to withstand any kind of load, parallel-redundant capacity up to 8 units, Eco-Mode operation, flexible configuration (any combination of single-phase/three phase input and output) and a wide range of possibilities in combination and stand-alone solutions. All of these services give energy savings, avoid any disturbance affecting the loads, improve the reliability, extend the lifespan of the batteries and reduce the costs of installing, operating and cooling electrical equipment.

Although the installation was set up only for the event, the managers of the Sagrada Familia building have commissioned Salicru with the permanent protection of their facilities, for the building has for years had Salicru equipment and electrical protection systems.
