Energy neutrality begins with UPS efficiency

The International Energy Agency estimates that improvements in energy efficiency will contribute around 40% of the emission reductions needed to meet UN climate targets worldwide. It's clear, therefore, that energy efficiency is essential at all levels, and uninterruptible power systems (UPS) are no exception.

The European Commission shares this view and, given the importance of UPS in all kinds of industries but particularly data centres, published a Code of Conduct (CoC) containing guidelines on their energy efficiency. The CoC sets out efficiency requirements for UPS according to their performance classification, distinguishing between VFD, VI and VFI (offline or standby, line-interactive and on-line double conversion, respectively). It also classifies UPS into two efficiency levels: Standard and Elite. For example, the efficiency requirement for a 10kW VFI-type UPS is 87.5% in the Standard category and 90% in the Elite category.

As a benchmark manufacturer of UPS, Salicru is not only a signatory to the CoC but also meets all its specifications for devices in the most demanding Elite category. Moreover, our adherence to this EC initiative from the outset is testament to our commitment to energy efficiency.

Efficient UPS for energy neutrality in 2050

The EC has also given special consideration to the importance of cloud computing, data centres and the critical role of UPS within them. The ultimate goal is for these facilities to achieve emission neutrality by 2050. There is no doubt that demand from data centres and the renewable energy sector has grown tremendously in recent years.

In response to this and to reflect the company’s high regard for ecological awareness, Salicru has reinforced its commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency by creating its own ‘green’ brand, SLC Greenergy Solutions. This brand encompasses a range of equipment that, in addition to guaranteeing a stable and continuous electrical supply, incorporates technology capable of optimising energy consumption and reducing production costs, thus generating significant financial savings.

The SLC Greenergy Solutions brand offers a broad range of products, including UPS, grid-connected solar inverters and variable frequency drives. Salicru’s cutting-edge UPS models are made from more than 80% recyclable materials and offer efficiency levels of between 96% and 99%.

They also incorporate state-of-the-art technical features such as the High-Efficiency Mode (which allows the batteries to be dynamically isolated from the device’s DC bus to feed the inverter with a lower DC voltage); Eco Mode (to power the loads directly through the static bypass whenever within an acceptable range of voltage and current); Smart-efficiency Mode (which distributes the loads between the minimum possible modules to achieve maximum operational efficiency); Batt-watch (which monitors the status of the batteries by regulating the load according to temperature, the number of consumers connected or the type of battery); and Double Conversion High-Efficiency Mode (which uses 3-level PWM power modules with integrated IGBTs to reduce cooling costs and, therefore, overall operating expenses).
