UPS in smart buildings

The “smart” concept, this being understood as the group of advanced technologies that provide a giant step forwards in the automation and features of all types of system, is at its peak. The construction sector, particularly the design and equipping of buildings, plays a principal role in this trend.

A smart building can be defined as one that uses technologies to ensure an efficient and inexpensive use of resources while creating a safe, comfortable environment for its occupants. Among the technologies implemented in smart buildings are IoT (Internet of Things) sensors, building management and artificial intelligence (AI) systems and robotics, all integrated and supplemented by existing solutions that have been re-adapted.

Automation is extremely important in a smart building, given the high degree of communication among the different processes. For example, between the data sent by motion sensors, which operate in real time and are connected to IoT, and the building management systems. This automation spreads to HVAC, lighting and security, among other areas.

The ultimate goal of this configuration and of the investment it entails is to optimise the space, the energy consumption and the comfort of those who use or reside in the building. There is, therefore, a financial justification behind the implementation of smart solutions in a building, as lower consumption reduces the energy bill, particularly with the energy crisis that has made it more expensive, as is the case at present. The fewer space requirements also represent a financial saving in property rentals or purchases.

Buildings with the utmost protection

All the equipment and devices forming a smart building must have a reliable, permanent and high quality electricity supply. Whatever the function of the building, whether it is commercial, business, educational or residential, uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS) are capable of ensuring the hardware and software infrastructure remains protected. Should the electricity supply be interrupted, the UPS will continue to provide the necessary power so that the computer equipment installed in the building has enough time to switch off and reboot correctly, and to save the data and make backup copies.

The threats hanging over buildings that are rich in technological resources are not restricted to a lack of electricity supply but may also involve factors such as excessive demand peaks, disturbances in the grid, and extreme weather conditions. The connection of a vast number of electronic equipment and devices means that protecting these assets becomes even more important from a financial and operational viewpoint, as their correct working order is essential, as indicated above, for those in the building to be able to continue moving around and conduct their activities.

It must also be remembered that electronic components have increasingly precise requirements with regard their power. In fact, alterations in the electrical grid, which appear in the form of overvoltages, microcuts, voltage oscillations and frequency fluctuations, among others, could seriously damage the components and, as a result, the equipment and the very operability of the building.

This risk is too high and, as such, is unacceptable. Fortunately, building owners and administrators have the support of UPS manufacturers with as much experience and such an extensive catalogue as Salicru, capable of meeting the protection requirements of the most modern buildings.
