Lithium batteries solve space and temperature issues

Lithium is increasingly emerging as an ideal solution for Uninterruptible Power Supply Systems (UPS) due to its ability to store more energy in less space and the fact that it requires less maintenance, making it a preferred option for some markets.

Salicru has recently supplied three 500 kVA SLC ADAPT2 units with lithium batteries to a fruit canning company. The devices are designed to provide 10 minutes of backup time, and their energy density allows them to extend the autonomy per unit of volume. Located on the outskirts of an area with frequent micro-outages, the company has seen first-hand how the SLC ADAPT2s have prevented its heavy production machinery from electrical disturbances. Given that it has a production period of only three months a year and a workforce of 600 people, any disruption quadrupled the consequent losses, making a reliable power supply imperative. On an international level, Salicru has carried out a high-power installation using the same SLC ADAPT2 series in the centre of Gewan Island in Doha (Qatar).

Using these batteries in critical infrastructures guarantees the continuity of essential processes in spaces that, due to their architecture, cannot be extended or air-conditioned. A notable example is the 80 kVA SLC CUBE4 that AENA has installed at Girona Airport to maintain continuity for some of the complex processes conducted within the airport facilities. The use of lithium technology provides increased autonomy and reliability within a compact space.

Another example is the equipment supplied to the Pharmaceutical Federation (FEDEFARMA), the leading distributor of products for pharmacies in Catalonia and Valencia, delivering over 95 million units each year. FEDEFARMA has an 800 kVA SLC X-TRA series UPS at its automated logistics centre in Palau-solità i Plegamans (Barcelona), which operates 24x7 every day of the year. The UPS protects the sophisticated robotic logistics equipment, ensuring uninterrupted operation and offering 10 minutes of backup time.
