Battery monitoring and analysis: a key element for UPS operation

Monday, 26 january 2015

In the event of a power failure, the availability of UPS systems is essential to ensure that technical equipment is protected.

But, in order for UPSs to be able to perform this function, it is also essential for their own batteries to have the necessary electrical charge and operate at full capacity if we want to successfully overcome the challenge of dealing with power cuts in today’s industrial world.

To achieve this, Salicru uses a battery monitoring and analysis system called BACS to ensure a full and permanent operating capacity, thereby preventing unexpected or unnoticed faults caused by defective batteries, extending their useful life and helping to maintain the reliability of the UPS.

This management system operates through battery monitoring, control and alarms, and is suitable for any type of lead (AGM, gel, sealed or open lead-acid), nickel or lithium-ion battery. It periodically checks its internal resistance, temperature and voltage. It is also possible to adjust the charging voltage of each battery and manage environmental measurements (temperature, humidity, hydrogen gas content) and applications (UPS systems, rectifiers, DC systems, inverters and other devices). This ensures that the batteries always remain in optimum operating conditions.

The system’s ability to constantly monitor and individually control the charging voltages of each battery ensures battery availability at all times - making the so-called Achilles heel of UPS systems (and any other power device) a thing of the past.
